Friend, for the longest time, I have been in the season of applying for jobs. Job after job, I would read the requirements and qualifications needed because there is no point applying for a job if I am unqualified for it. But as you keep browsing through the jobs, you find one that you are actually qualified for and as you read through the criteria, you tell yourself ‘oh wow, I can do this job and I can do it well’ but the people on the other side who is reading your application label you ‘unqualified’.
Have you ever been labelled as unqualified? I have.
Have you ever labelled yourself as unqualified? I have.
In moments of feeling incompetent and useless, especially when it comes to doing Kingdom work, I think back to David; the youngest runt of the family, the one who is often overlooked and the one who must have looked pretty short standing against Goliath. I think out of everyone who was out on that battlefield, David would have looked like the one who was the least qualified – a shepherd’s boy who does not have any formal training or knows what it’s like to be in the battlefield. But in God’s eyes, David was the only one who qualified to fight Goliath.
While people saw Goliath, David saw this uncircumcised Philistine who defies the armies of the living God. When people saw David walk out unprepared with no armour, God armed him with five smooth stones and His presence. When Goliath met David with a sword, spear and a javelin, David met Goliath in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel whom Goliath had defied.
Friend, sometimes God calls us into places and arenas where we feel like we are not qualified to be. But take heart, we are not going in our own strength, with our own qualifications but with God, with the Lord who goes before us and had prepared us in advance for the obstacles we face.
I bet when David had no idea that fighting off a lion to rescue his sheep was training ground for fighting off the ugly Philistine who defied God. Friend, we might not know which seasons of our life acted as a training ground to grow us into who God has called us to be. We might not even have the right qualifications to go into places where God has called us to go. But one thing I know for sure – who God calls, He qualifies. He qualifies us with His presence, His guidance, His wisdom and His strength.
There have been many seasons in my life where I’ve felt unqualified. There was also a season in my life where I felt unqualified to lay the foundation for, We are Chai. But God who called me is faithful. I know that even though I feel unqualified, God qualified me when He called me. In that same way, God qualified you when He called you.
Lord, thank you that we can rest easy knowing that you qualify us into anything you calls us into. We pray that as we walk into your calling, we pray for any insecurity be washed away by your presence and we lean and depend on you to fulfil who you have called us to be. In Jesus name we ask this, amen.
