Reluctant to take on challenges
I sat in my vicar/pastor’s office trying to hold the best poker face I could manage as he asked if I could lead that year’s Holiday Club for children. It is the event of the summer and the last time I helped out in Holiday Club was over six years ago because it was that one summer we didn’t go to India.
I had no clue as to what I was supposed to be organising, crafts to buy, children to attend, I had no idea how to do this. I was reluctant to say yes. So, I took a deep breath, looked hesitant and I was ready to say no. But the words that came out of mouth were: ‘Yeah, I can give it a try’.
See, somewhere between the deep breath and looking hesitant, I remembered the verse I always used to say when I was scared to do something – ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’
It was a verse I would say when assignments mounted up, when I was scared to confront someone, when I was in the same room with a lizard in India and it was the same verse I said to myself as I said yes to my vicar. Don’t get me wrong, the hesitant feeling did not go away but I had peace that passes all understanding because if God is involved, I can do all things through Christ because He strengthens me.
Friend, let me be honest here – Holiday Club was one of the hardest things I did that year. But it was one of the most rewarding things I did that year. Some of the parents who came to our Holiday Club were not Christians, so joy filled my heart when one of the non-Christian parent wanted to know more about Jesus and wanted a Bible to take home with her! God used that as an opportunity to plant a seed and that all started with me saying yes and being obedient to God.
Sometimes what God has called us to do is scary and there is a moment where you wonder if you really did hear God and doubt can creep in. But in those moment, can I encourage you to hold firm to what God has said:
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. “
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Lord, I thank you that when I face challenges, I am not alone in that. Lord, in those moments I am reluctant to say yes to you and reluctant to take on challenges, may I lean on you. May I depend on you and gain my strength from you. May I be a vessel for you to use for your glory. In Jesus name I ask this, amen.
