Friendship: Surrounding Yourself with Community
“Where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them.” - Matthew 18:20
In the summer of 2014, I was volunteering for my church and was helping some of the leaders in a course called the Princess Club founded by Amy Lineburg. It was this amazing course which seeked to allow young girls to understand their identity in Christ, to know that if they belonged to the King - they were heirs too.
Through volunteering, I met Linu. It’s crazy to use the word ‘met’ because I had known Linu for more than 3 or 4 years by this point, but we had rarely spoken - if I’m honest we’d hadn’t spoken at all. So I like to think of this as the first time, I met Linu and Linu met me.
Once the club was done and it was time to go home, Linu was about to take the longest way home ever! So I said to her, why don’t you come this way with me? And who knew (aside from God) that this would be the first encounter that led to the vision of Chai.
Linu and I began to talk about all things writing. We both loved to write and this was the first time we would share it outside of our families and to the people we really didn’t know. I can’t speak for Linu, but there was something about her that allowed me to trust her. I struggled with trusting others. I struggled to identify with people and the closest people to me, it took them a long time to be that close.
There was something different here. We talked so much, I even decided to walk past my own house and continue walking with Linu as we spoke more about this vision and dream and how it was not a pipe dream. How this dream would come to pass. How God will grant us this vision.
On this day, God granted me community. He gave me my person.
Linu and I say this to each other quite often (yes, we may have taken it from Greys Anatomy but the same still stands - aha). We say, you are my person.
She is the person I dream with, laugh with, at times struggle with, cry with (if you know us, we’re criers!), but most importantly, she is the person I find community with.
Here at Chai, there are two things we want to proclaim; a) Jesus will breathe life into you and you will live, you shall be alive.
b) You can find community here. A community that knows your voice, that allows it to be heard, a safe space where it can be shared. A community that loves. A community that covers. A community that finds its strength in sisterhood.
Who are you surrounding yourself with? Who is your community? Do they allow you to be heard? We can sometimes take for granted the people who surround us but actually it is extremely important to remember that not all those around you are for you. Especially, if they do not walk with the Lord.
Linu reminds me of God’s promises for my life. She covers me in prayer, she appropriately convicts me of my sins, she reminds me to never give up, she quotes scripture over my life, she tells the enemy to get behind me! I do the same for her and we want to do the same for you.

I pray that every person reading this Lord Jesus, knows that the greatest community is found in you. I pray for you to bring into view the people they will need to journey with, to pray with, laugh with and live with. I pray that Chai continues to be a place where community is found too. In Jesus’ name, amen.
