Praying When You Don't Feel Like Praying
Have you had one of those days when it feels like a chore to pray? I have; many times. When I feel like I don’t act like a ‘good Christian’, I tend to shy away from talking with God and praying, in case He is mad at me or wants to talk about it with me! But the longer I don’t talk to Him, I get grumpy, tired and then I get to that stage where I cry and then cry at God and blubber ‘I’m sorry God. I need you.’
Have you been there too? Because if you have, don’t worry, probably all of us have at some point.
So, what can you do when you don’t feel like praying?
First off, don’t beat yourself up and buy into the lie that you don’t truly love God. Even with our human relationships, there are times when you don’t feel like communicating. It’s human, we are human.
Next up, don’t allow yourself to stay in that place. We are humans, but we are also part of a royal priesthood, and our souls yearning to connect with God. So, take some baby steps. Figure out why you don’t feel like praying – is it because you feel inadequate? Is it because it feels too much like a routine or is it something completely different? Hitting the pause button and doing some soul searching might figure out why you feel like it and that’s half the battle. Knowing what is blocking you meeting with God will help you figure out a remedy as how to fix it.
People go through different phases of praying – all through my university life, I journaled all my prayers. I used to finish a journal in a few months ready to whiz through the next one because I was writing down pages and pages of prayer. I wrote a lot more after I finished watching War Room and I realised I may not have a room but I have a book. Then, I got into the say your prayers out loud and don’t write them down phase of my prayer life. While my prayers were not written down, it was said in whispers in the night, while in bed and my mind started to wander and that’s the stage I am in right now.
Figure out your rhythm of praying for this season – maybe you are at the stage where you are levelling up and settling into a new routine of praying and talking to God. In that stage, take some time to enjoy God, worship Him and not put a lot of pressure on yourself to pray in a rigid way. Praying could just mean talking to God in your head while you make the bed or while you brush your teeth. Praying could be saying short quick prayers or reading a prayer that someone posted on their social media. If you feel like you have nothing to say, not even a good joke to make the Lord chuckle, list five things in your head as to why you are grateful for in that season. If you are struggling with that, just be still in that moment, for as long as you can and just call out to Him…
Even if you don’t feel like praying, the best thing we can do for ourselves is to pray. Just say the word, call on His name and He is already there, closer than you know. But girlfriend, in those moments that is the hardest to pray, choose to pray. It’s worth it.
